- What inspired you to start skating? I got into it the cheesy way and saw “Whip It!” like a lot of people. I started searching for local roller derby teams and found the Slayers who pointed me in the direction of NPT. I wasn’t 18 yet so couldn’t train, but a few of the first NPT members were doing a meet and greet in a pub and convinced me to come along. 1 session and I was hooked, I even ran home and anyone who knows me knows I don’t run!
- What do you want to achieve as a skater?
I want to constantly improve my skill. I want to be strong and fast and the best of Jammer and Blocker I can be. The idea is to be an all round player, double threat and be the best I can be.
- Who’s your skate idol?
I have a few. Kid Block is my biggest derby crush!
- What are you skating on at the moment?
Still on my first pair of skates, good ol’ R3’s. I’m between wheels right now.
- Why NPT? They are my home team. They are my first team. They have built me up to be the skater I am now. We’re like a huge family and I’m the baby of the team but don’t let that fool you, please! I’ve had ups and downs with good games and bad injuries but have always found a home in this team.
FUN FACT! Carys’ favourite movie is Ferris Buellers Day Off and can recite every word. Especially all the musical numbers
Today our new skates from Roller Derby Riot got on a pair of feet, Hannah one of our new girls took the plunge and tried roller derby and loved it, she was great really relaxed and confident which is great for a roller derby virgin, well done :)
Today we had our first training session; it was great to get the skates rolling and get the team started. We got to Hengwrt barn at 9:30 on a very cold January morning, we waited with anticipation to see who would turn up, and eventually we had some eager derby girls and refs walk through the door, phew the advertising worked :)
As there were different skating levels we went over the basics of skating, stops and falls, which everyone picked up very quickly.
All in all a very good morning, we plan now to keep on advertising and hit Neath Port Talbot with the derby bug big time! Thanks to everyone who has helped us out so far, the support from the local and derby community has been great, cheers guys.
We are looking forward to joining the Roller Derby community, and cant wait to be up and skating, scrimming and bouting. We know 2012 will mean a lot of hard work but we are ready for the challenge and the fun.
Hopefully it will be a begining of another great South Wales Roller Derby team, we are starting January with a potential 16 people and hopefully with some hard promotion in the next two weeks a few more.
First training session is on January 14th, 10am to 12pm at Hengwrt Community Sport Centre, Briton Ferry
